David Coates
I grew up in the seaside community of Lewisporte, NL. Many of my paintings reflect and draw upon my memories of the ever changing sea, the fluidity of motion, the vibrant colors of our seasons and the rugged and beautiful coastlines that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.
I am also influenced by humour and our province’s rich history and enjoy creating fine art paintings that reflect our dramatic landscapes and seascapes. My work often reflects the motion and beauty of these natural elements using acrylic as my medium of choice.
I generally start with a photo or from my own visual perspective and lay down a rough sketch. However, my goal isn’t to paint exactly what I see but my interpretation of what I see and how I feel on any given day. I paint in layers and will often add or change a shape or color to reflect the message and feeling I am trying to portray.

A cozy red cabin in the middle of the forest with a warm fire is a dream of many. Winter activities abound with the abundance of snow.

Craig’s Place is a representation of a relaxing time in the summer sun with the sounds of the ocean near by, fun times and maybe a little bit of adventure.
Something Fishy

Newfoundland and Labrador offers some of the best fishing and diverse species for the would be angler. Fishing is a passion and a pastime for millions of people world wide. The painting depicts a large fish as it jumps it way upstream. Certainly would make for a good supper or trophy display if you could catch it.
