Christopher Kovacs

Christopher Kovacs was born in Toronto and lived in Richmond Hill, Kingston, Edmonton, and Boston, before settling in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1997. Displays of talent as a child led to twice weekly instruction in fine art for eight years, beginning in grade 5, under the mentorship of Dutch artist William Wegman. He later received a year of instruction from artist Christopher Broadhurst at Queen’s University at Kingston. He began selling his first works on commission in the early 1980s and progressed in 2002 to selling original paintings through his website, christopherkovacs.com. He is represented by Red Ochre Gallery.

Most of his work is in watercolour with detailed, lifelike scenes of rural Newfoundland. Each image on his website accompanied by researched details about the culture and history of the area, or a description of how he came to create the painting. Through his travels across five continents, he has also added scenes from other countries.

In 2008, his painting of Green Gables House in PEI was selected for three national/international distinctions in association with the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables. It was reproduced on millions of stamps and postcards issued by Canada Post and Japan Post; it was also used by the Royal Canadian Mint.

He has been featured in Canadian Who’s Who since 2005.

He currently lives in Paradise, surrounded by water, trees, wildlife, and man-made constructs in various stages of devolution, all of which serve as constant inspiration for his work.
